The Pigeon Forge Rod Run has a long and fascinating history dating back to the 1970s. Originally called Shades of the Past, this event started in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, hosted by a Maryville-based car club. However, in 1982, Gatlinburg opted out, leading to a move north to The Grand Hotel in Pigeon Forge, where it was rebranded as The Grand Run.

In 1986, the event evolved into two separate gatherings: The Grand Run remained at the Grand Hotel, while Shades of the Past took on a life of its own at a new venue. By 1991, MCS Promotions took over the Grand Run, which was originally held only in September. The Spring Rod Run debuted in 1995, and in 2014, both events officially became the Pigeon Forge Rod Run that we know and love today.
