Place of a Thousand Drips: The Smoky Mountains Best Waterfall

Discover the Place of a Thousand Drips Waterfall
Within Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there are only two waterfalls accessible by car, and one of the most unique is known as Place of a Thousand Drips. This waterfall earns its name from the delicate network of numerous small streams cascading down the rocks, rather than a single, large fall. It is located near the end of the scenic Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, a picturesque drive well worth exploring.
The flow of Place of a Thousand Drips varies with weather conditions. After rainfall, the waterfall is at its most impressive, with multiple rivulets weaving through moss-covered rocks, creating a shimmering tapestry of water. During drier periods, the flow may diminish to a gentle trickle, but the natural beauty of the site remains captivating.
The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is a narrow, winding, one-way road that offers spectacular views from the comfort of your vehicle. The trail begins at Traffic Light #8 in Gatlinburg and spans approximately six miles, looping back into the town. This leisurely, self-guided drive includes numerous points of interest along the way.
To visit Place of a Thousand Drips, proceed to Stop #15 on the trail. The waterfall will be visible on the left-hand side. Just beyond the falls, there is a pull-off area on the right for parking. Visitors often pause here to capture photographs, so drive cautiously and be mindful of pedestrians and oncoming traffic as you park and walk.
Photographing waterfalls requires some technique, with many photographers using a tripod and longer exposure times to achieve the smooth, flowing effect of the water. Regardless of your photography experience or equipment, be sure to take a moment to capture this stunning feature—whether as a photo or a short video—to preserve the memory of your visit.
Waterfalls are among the park’s most cherished attractions, thanks to its abundant rainfall and numerous streams. While most waterfalls in the park require at least a short hike, Place of a Thousand Drips offers a convenient and rewarding experience for visitors who may have limited time or prefer not to hike.
