The Rampant Lion Celtic Pub in Gatlinburg

The Rampant Lion Celtic Pub: A Unique Culinary and Cultural Experience in Gatlinburg

Following the success of the Fox and Parrot Tavern, owners Brian and Dana Papworth brought a Celtic twist to Gatlinburg with the opening of the Rampant Lion Celtic Pub. This distinctive establishment blends an extensive selection of spirits with authentic cuisine and a welcoming, family-oriented atmosphere.

Over the years, the pub has curated an impressive collection of nearly 200 spirits, with a particular emphasis on global whiskies. Visitors can explore selections from Scotland, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia, Wales, and Japan. In addition to its renowned whisky lineup, the Rampant Lion also offers 80 varieties of wine, 50 gins, 22 draft beers, and a full menu of traditional Celtic dishes—all served with warm and attentive hospitality.

A True Celtic Pub Experience

Located just over a mile from East Parkway, the Rampant Lion occupies the top floor of what was once the Papworths' photography studio. Tucked away in a peaceful corner of Gatlinburg, the pub exudes the charm of a traditional Celtic gathering place. Inspired by the communal spirit of pubs found in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and other Celtic regions, the venue is designed to be family-friendly and inclusive.

Meals are freshly prepared and may take a little longer than at other local spots. In the meantime, guests are encouraged to relax with board games, chat with fellow patrons, or enjoy the company of the hosts. Community events—ranging from themed dinners to seasonal celebrations like Guy Fawkes Day and Burns Night—further enhance the cultural experience.

Menu Highlights

The culinary offerings at the Rampant Lion are a highlight in their own right. Appetizers include Scotch eggs, prawn cocktail, sprats on toast, and bangers and mash. For lighter fare, fresh salads and warm bread with dipping oil are also available.

Entrées feature a diverse range of Celtic-inspired favorites. Popular choices include classic fish and chips, Cornish pasties, shepherd’s pie, steak and mushroom pie, pan-seared lamb, poacher’s roll, and deep-fried oysters. Each dish is carefully prepared and presented with attention to tradition and flavor.

The dessert menu adds a memorable finish to the meal. Indulgent selections include tiramisu reimagined as "Tira Mi-Su," Chocolate Overload Cake, and a pineapple cake with a tropical touch. One standout option is the Scottish Tipsy Laird—a traditional dessert made with ladyfingers soaked in Drambuie and layered with custard, raspberries, and almonds. For those preferring a milder treat, brie served with preserves offers a delightful balance.

Warmth, Hospitality, and Unrushed Dining

Dining at the Rampant Lion is more than a meal—it’s an experience. The atmosphere is casual yet rich in tradition, where guests are treated like friends rather than customers. There's no rush to turn over tables, allowing visitors to linger and truly enjoy their time.

Be sure to try the beer cheese dip—a customer favorite—and take time to explore the full drink menu, whether you're a whisky connoisseur or simply looking for a cozy place to unwind.
