Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community Trail

Exploring the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community in Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is a celebrated hub of Appalachian creativity, home to one of the largest collectives of independent artisans in the United States. This rich artistic tradition is most vividly experienced along the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community Trail—an 8-mile scenic loop located just outside downtown Gatlinburg. The route winds through a vibrant community of workshops, galleries, and studios, offering an authentic glimpse into the region’s longstanding craftsmanship.

A Trail Steeped in History

Recognized as a Tennessee Heritage Arts & Crafts Trail, this unique corridor was established in 1937 when local artists began showcasing and selling their handmade goods directly from their homes. As interest from visitors grew, more artisans joined the loop, transforming it into a thriving destination for both shopping and cultural immersion.

Today, the trail continues to honor its roots with over 120 working studios and shops. Visitors are encouraged to watch artisans at work, browse a wide array of handcrafted items, and engage directly with the creators—many of whom are continuing family legacies passed down through generations.

How to Experience the Trail

To start your journey, head to traffic light #3 in downtown Gatlinburg and turn onto Highway 321 North (East Parkway). After about three miles, you'll see signs marking the entrance to the 8-mile loop.

The trail is open year-round, with most shops operating from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though individual hours may vary. Along the way, you'll find charming cafés, tea rooms, and candy shops, making it easy to take breaks between visits to studios and galleries.

For a car-free adventure, hop on the Gatlinburg Trolley’s Yellow Route, which services the Arts & Crafts Community. Departing from the Gatlinburg Mass Transit Center near traffic light #5 (adjacent to Ripley’s Aquarium), the trolley allows passengers to ride all day for just $1.00. It operates daily from April through October, and Monday through Saturday during November and December. Trolleys stop at multiple locations along the trail, though wait times between pickups may be an hour or more.
