Foothills Parkway is a national parkway that borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offering some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the region. A particularly notable segment of this route is the once-missing “middle section,” completed in 2018, which runs from Walland to Wears Valley. This newly opened stretch has quickly become a favorite among visitors for its exceptional spring wildflower displays and vibrant autumn foliage.
This section of the Parkway is a rare example of a truly untouched drive. It features a well-maintained road surface, minimal traffic, a leisurely speed limit, and a complete absence of commercial development. Heavy trucks are prohibited, and the gentle elevation changes make for a smooth, relaxing experience. The drive is characterized by sweeping curves and elevated views, with multiple scenic overlooks where travelers can stop to admire the landscape. Elegant bridge designs along the route further enhance the experience, occasionally giving the sensation of floating above the terrain.
While the drive is peaceful and picturesque, it does require some preparation. The roadway is unlit, making it ill-suited for nighttime travel unless you're already familiar with the route. There are no restroom facilities along the Parkway, and mobile phone reception is often unreliable in the mountainous terrain. GPS may also be inconsistent, so reviewing a map before departure is strongly recommended.
Foothills Parkway serves as an alternative to Highway 321 for travel between Pigeon Forge and Townsend. Access points are available in Wears Valley, Townsend, and Walland, with the latter serving as the most commonly used entry for visitors arriving from the north. From Walland, the Parkway continues southward on its original section toward Chilhowee, culminating at a serene lake and picnic area—an ideal stop for a break and a meal.
At its southern end, the Parkway reaches Chilhowee, a site of historical significance as an ancient Cherokee village. It also serves as the gateway to Chilhowee Lake and Recreation Area in the Cherokee National Forest. This area offers a more rugged and remote outdoor experience, particularly appealing to campers and those seeking further exploration.
Nearby, travelers can connect to Highway 129, which includes the renowned “Tail of the Dragon,” an 11-mile road featuring over 300 curves. This stretch is a favorite among motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts, though it may be less suitable for casual drivers due to its demanding layout.
The full drive from Chilhowee back north spans nearly 32 miles and can be completed in just over an hour—though most visitors take longer due to the irresistible views at the many scenic pull-offs. Among the highlights is Look Rock, an overlook featuring a short half-mile trail leading to an observation tower. This spot, the highest point on Chilhowee Mountain, provides expansive views including a stunning vantage of Mount Le Conte.
The middle segment from Walland to Wears Valley—the long-awaited “missing link”—took nearly 70 years to complete and is considered by many to be the Parkway’s crown jewel. Its sweeping views, serenity, and immersive natural surroundings make it a standout among the Smoky Mountain’s scenic drives.
In addition to the southern and central segments, there is also a completed six-mile portion of the Parkway extending eastward from Cosby toward Interstate 40. This lesser-known route offers yet another opportunity for scenic exploration.
Although the Foothills Parkway was originally envisioned as a continuous corridor connecting various points across the Smoky Mountain region, only segments have been completed to date. One future goal is for it to connect with the Spur, the busy roadway linking Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, which is technically part of the planned Parkway system. Until that time, Foothills Parkway remains primarily a scenic route rather than a thoroughfare—and as a scenic drive, it is truly unmatched in its beauty and tranquility.
