Fishing in Gatlinburg – Where to Go, What to Bring

Fishing in the Smoky Mountains: Regulations, Locations, and Guided Tours

The Smoky Mountains are renowned for their native brook and brown trout populations, with Gatlinburg and Great Smoky Mountains National Park offering more than 900 miles of rivers and streams ideal for fishing enthusiasts. Whether you are a seasoned angler or a beginner, the area presents excellent opportunities to cast your line in some of the most scenic waters in Tennessee.

Before heading out, it is important to understand and comply with local and state fishing regulations. For instance, children under nine years of age do not require any fishing licenses or permits. However, adults must obtain the appropriate licenses, which vary depending on age and state of residence. For detailed information on these requirements, contact the Gatlinburg Recreation Department at (865) 436-4990 to request their Trout Fishing brochure or visit the official website at http://gatlinburgtn.gov/outdoor-activities/fishing.html.

Once you have secured the necessary permits, you can fish in several locations within Gatlinburg, including the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River, LeConte Creek, Roaring Fork Creek, and Dudley Creek. There are also two designated children’s fishing areas that are regularly stocked with trout: North Gatlinburg Park, located at the city’s northern Parkway entrance, and Mynatt Park, situated off Airport Road. Both locations feature clear signage marking the fishing boundaries.

Please note that fishing is prohibited within Gatlinburg every Thursday to allow for trout stocking, and from December 1st through March 31st, all trout caught in the area must be released immediately.

Fishing is allowed throughout most of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, except in specific areas marked for fish conservation. Both the park and the city require anglers to use only single-hook lures or flies; the use of live bait such as worms or corn is not permitted. Proper licensing is mandatory in all fishing locations.
