Bush’s Beans Visitor Center: History and Flavor Together

Bush’s Beans Visitor Center: A Hidden Gem Near the Smoky Mountains

A visit to the Smoky Mountains isn’t complete without a stop at the Bush’s Beans Visitor Center—an unexpected but delightful detour just a short drive from Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. This charming destination offers a unique glimpse into the more than 110-year history of one of America's most iconic pantry staples.

A Legacy of Family and Flavor

Founded by A.J. Bush in 1908, Bush’s Beans remains a family-owned company, proudly preserving its heritage through generations. At the Visitor Center, guests are invited to explore the company’s rich legacy and learn how a humble can of beans became a household name.

An Engaging and Free Museum Experience

The museum is open to the public at no cost and offers an informative self-guided tour, beginning with a 20-minute film that recounts the brand's origins and evolution. Interactive exhibits provide insight into the production process (though the actual factory isn’t open for tours, it can be seen just across the road).

Visitors can explore a detailed scale model of the factory, view memorabilia from Bush’s popular advertising campaigns, and browse family heirlooms and historical artifacts. A playful highlight includes a walk-through "can of beans" and a novelty scale that shows your weight in beans—perfect for photo ops and lighthearted fun.

Gift Shop and General Store

Adjacent to the museum, the general store features a curated selection of Bush’s-branded merchandise, regional souvenirs, and novelty items. Many of the products include images of Duke, the brand’s beloved canine mascot. A variety of Bush’s Beans flavors, including some not commonly found in local stores, are also available for purchase.

Southern Fare at the Bush’s Family Café

After exploring the museum, visitors can enjoy a meal at the on-site Bush’s Family Café, known for its hearty Southern dishes and warm hospitality. Menu favorites include fried chicken, catfish, sweet potato fries, okra, and the uniquely Southern pinto bean pie. Meals are reasonably priced, with entrees typically ranging from $6 to $10. Each guest is treated to a complimentary sample of the “bean of the day” before their meal.

Accessibility and Amenities

The Visitor Center is fully wheelchair-accessible and offers ample free parking. While the facility welcomes service animals, family pets must remain outside. If you’re lucky, you might even meet Duke during one of his occasional guest appearances.
